Repair College Green fundraiser raises £14,000 over a matter of days

A fundraiser to repair College Green which set up following the Greta Thunberg rally has raised £14,000 over just a matter of days.

The fundraiser was set up after the grass area outside City Hall turned into a mud bath with thousands of people gathered in the wet weather to watch the world-renowned 17-year-old climate activist speak.

More than 20,000 people attended the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate event, marching around the city centre.

The cost to repair the damage to the land will fall to Bristol City Council and the taxpayer.

However, a GoFundMe page created by Jon Usher has now raised £14,000 over a matter of days and may help with the overall costs of helping to repair the green.

Mr Usher said: "I've been in touch with the Parks team at the Council. They'll be assessing College Green on Monday before making any assumptions on the course of action for repairing the damage.

"The team will be focusing on clearing up the muddy paths and making sure all the drainage gullies are clear over the weekend.

"Thanks for all your support so far!"

It's not yet known how much damage has been caused to College Green following the march and the council confirmed to Bristol Live on Friday that it will be carrying out the visual assessment today.

The council have since confirmed that: "If there are any funds left over after repairs we will use it for wildflower areas across the city."

Mr Usher said that the potential new wildflower planting area on College Green would act as a lovely legacy to remember Greta's visit to Bristol.
