WASHINGTON _ Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., is recovering at his Washington residence after being released over the weekend from the George Washington University Hospital.
Rutherford was taken from the Capitol on a stretcher after suffering "significant discomfort" during House votes outside the floor. Doctors believe the "acute digestive flare up" he suffered was caused by a reaction to an antibiotic he was taking for a cold, Kelly Simpson, Rutherford's chief of staff, said.
"He looks forward to returning to the office sometime early this week and has been in communication with congressional leadership and colleagues throughout the last week in preparation for his return," Simpson said in a statement.
Rutherford was elected last year in Florida's 4th Congressional District to succeed retiring Rep. Ander Crenshaw. He had a 41-year career in law enforcement and served as sheriff of Duval County in northeast Florida before his election to the House.
