Rep. Nancy Mace Leads GOP South Carolina Gubernatorial Race, Poll Shows

Rep. Nancy Mace

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace is leading a hypothetical Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina, according to a new poll.

The survey was conducted by nonpartisan organization South Carolina Policy Council. It shows Mace with 16 percent of the support, one point ahead of state Attorney General Alan Wilson, who has already launched his campaign.

Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette had 8 percent of the support, while Rep. Ralph Norman got 6 percent of the eventual vote. The poll surveyed 1,200 registered voters and has a margin of error of 2.77 percentage points.

However, a significant data point is the fact that more than half of all respondents (52 percent) said they were still undecided.

Mace has not confirmed a gubernatorial run but has not ruled it out either. "I will be making a decision over the next couple of days about my future," she told Fox News this past weekend.

"I believe I may be forced to run for governor because I can't watch my beautiful red state of South Carolina go woke. It's gone woke over the last couple of years," she added. On Monday she said there would be a "special announcement" and that she had "big things ahead."

Mace acknowledged she would be facing off against Wilson, who she accused of putting "pedophiles on trial and give them one day in jail." The victor would succeed Henry McMaster, who is term-limited.

The Cook Political Report rated the race as solid Republican, with the primary victor poised to become the next governor.
