Rep. Abby Finkenauer engaged to Elizabeth Warren campaign staffer

Rep. Abby Finkenauer announced her engagement over the weekend to fellow Iowan Daniel Wasta, who serves as Iowa political director for Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign.

“The couple has been together for nearly two years and are excited to build their life and home together in Iowa where Rep. Finkenauer and Mr. Wasta both grew up and where their families still reside,” said the Iowa Democrat’s congressional office in a release.

Wasta beat the congresswoman’s office in announcing the nuptial news.

“It will take a lifetime to fully express just how much she means to me. I’m so happy @Abby4Iowa said “YES” and we get to build a life together,” Wasta tweeted Sunday.

Finkenauer posted Sunday on Instagram: “I said YES to forever with Daniel, my best friend and my rock. We are so grateful for all the love & support of our families and friends as we take this next step building our life together.”

Unlike her betrothed, Finkenauer has yet to back any presidential candidate. Although the Iowa Democrat worked for the presidential campaign of then-Sen. Joe Biden in 2008, she told Roll Call in August that she has no plans to endorse “until the beginning of next year,” or right before Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses.

“I am my grandfather’s Democrat,” she told The Atlantic in a 2018 interview. “He was the former president of the Iowa Firefighters Association. He loved Joe Biden.”

In a state where Warren and Biden have been neck and neck in polls, one household’s preferences could make a difference.
