Reo Hatate closing in on Celtic transfer as versatile Japanese star set to kickstart mammoth January

Japanese star Reo Hatate is on the verge of becoming Celtic 's first signing of the January transfer window - according to a report.

The 24-year-old's contract is set to expire in January and he was left in floods of tears as he said farewell to Kawasaki Frontale fans after their most recent title success.

The Daily Mail state a deal "is well down the road", with Hatate expected to join compatriot Kyogo in Glasgow for the start of 2022.

Meanwhile, Japan international Daizen Maeda has also been strongly linked with Glasgow.

Hatate's versatility sets him apart with the all-action star playing significant game time at left-back, defensive midfield and attacking midfield.

Ange Postecoglou has spoken at length about his admiration for the quality of Japanese football, after spending three years with Yokohama Marinos.

And the Celtic boss admitted after Thursday's 3-2 defeat to that reinforcements are needed when the signing window opens.

He said: “There is no doubt. We are still just four or five months into building a team and it was never going to happen in one transfer window.

“We know that we need more depth and players in certain areas that I think can help us to bridge the gap.

“You look at the Leverkusen side and they have quality all the way through.

“What we want to do is be able to compete at that level and we need to continue to look to improve our squad and add depth so that we can compete in lots of competitions.”
