Renting and housing Dublin: Capital ranked most expensive city in eurozone to live in due to sky high rents

Dublin ranks as the most expensive city to live in due to sky high rents in the eurozone, a new survey has revealed.

The average rent in the capital now stands at over €2,000 per month making it costlier than Paris, Berlin, and Rome.

Globally, Dublin was classed 46th of the most expensive cities to live in for expatriates, according to figures from HR consulting firm Mercer.

The company’s Cost of Living Survey also revealed that the capital ranked sixth in Europe behind Zurich, Bern, Geneva, London, and Copenhagen, the Irish Times reports.

Noel O’Connor, senior consultant at Mercer’s Irish operation, said: “As with recent years, one of the major factors influencing Dublin’s ranking is the cost of rental accommodation.

“Rental accommodation is often the biggest cost for companies when placing an employee on assignment.”

But he added that despite the rising rents, Dublin is still a popular destination for expatriates.

He also said that organisations with EU headquarters in the UK may look to Dublin as a preferred option as Brexit progresses.
