Renters will be allowed to keep their pets under new tenancy rules

Landlords will no longer be able to ban pets from living in their homes unless they can prove they are badly behaved, under new government plans.

At current, only seven per cent of houses advertised for rent are marked as suitable for pets, according to The Sun .

Speaking to the publication, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick revealed his plans to change this, in a bid to prevent tenants from being torn away from their family pets.

He said: "Pets bring a huge amount of joy and comfort to people’s lives, helping their owners through difficult times and improving their mental and physical wellbeing.

"It’s a shame thousands of animal-loving tenants and their children can’t experience this because they rent their homes instead of owning.

"So, I’m overhauling our model tenancy contract."

However, the new legislation won't be legally-binding, but it has been reported that the Housing Secretary won't rule out making it a law if landlords refuse to play ball.

He explained: "We will be listening to tenants and landlords to see what more we can do to tackle this issue in a way that is fair to both."
