With words and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, Rent the musical is loosely based on the Puccini opera La Boheme, but set in the 90s. Rent opened off Broadway in 1996, and won a Pulitzer prize for drama. Now it arrives at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre Company.
In the 90s, New York City’s East Village was home to an ever-diminishing bohemian community. Development pushed people from their borough, while the threat of AIDS loomed large. Rent sees a group of friends fighting for their place in the face of such quiet vanishing, fighting for their lives and their friendships.
