Renowned Prestwick restaurant Taj Bar & Kitchen goes Euros daft with special football curry pies

A famous curry house has gone football-daft by spicing up Scotland's bid for the Euros.

Prestwick's Taj Bar & Kitchen is full Bhuna behind Steve Clarke and his boys.

And their tasty new creation of 'curry pies' is threatening to prove a taste sensation among loyal customers.

Perry Uppal, who owns the iconic restaurant with parents Bobby and Deisho, told Ayrshire Live: "It all came about after what seemed like a silly idea at a staff meeting.

"We're all about innovating and creating new concepts and wanted to do something to mark the Euros.

"So I said...what about curry pies? They would make the perfect half-time snack.

"Everyone looked at me like I was daft but the more we thought about it the idea became a winner."

The Taj team is offering customers ANY of their renowned curries inside the pastry crusts in either tender chicken or lamb.

Perry, 35, said: "They're made to order in batches of four or more so we'll do whatever people want.

"As long as they phone and order with one day's notice, they can come and collect in time to enjoy the next day's game.

"We're also serving some as part of our street food menu in the restaurant and they're going down a treat. The response has been amazing."

However, Perry added: "It's been funny because the guys in the kitchen have never known anything like this.

"And my mum just keeps saying – this is not our food, it's not what we're known for!

"But the customers are loving it and we are responding to what they want.

"We've had some interesting requests already. Someone phoned up asking for a Beef Madras pie.

"It's great because we're using the pastry locally from Murray at the Electric Bakery.

"He was able to give us hints and tips on how best to cook the pies."

The Taj, long renowned as one of the finest curry houses in the west of Scotland, underwent a huge renovation in 2019 following a fire.

And its re-emergence as a new-look 'Bar & Kitchen' has proved a winner as it celebrates its 40th year.

Perry said: "You're never sure how people will react when you make the changes we did.

"But we have incredibly loyal customers who know that they will always get good food and service at the Taj, no matter of the change in appearance.

"And people have responded brilliantly to the new look – it's a new concept of doing things for us but it has really worked.

"It's never been more important to change and adapt but at the heart of it all is the same food for which we've always been known."
