An international exhibition of iconic fashion images shot by world-renowned photographers is bringing a touch of high-fashion glamour to a select handful of regional galleries in Australia.
The Coming into Fashion presentation has opened at the Rockhampton Regional Art Gallery in central Queensland, the first of just three venues in Australia to show the collection which has previously been on display in all the major fashion capitals of the world.
The showcase highlights the evolution of fashion photography through the last century with images from the Conde Naste publishing house that have been featured in some the world's leading fashion magazines including Vogue and Vanity Fair.
Some of the most recognisable images are of supermodels Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss shot during the 1980s and 90s.
The first presentation of the exhibition was in Berlin in 2012 before it moved on to Milan, Paris, Tokyo and other major cities in Europe and Asia.
Curator of the Australian version of the show Alexandra Nitschke said it is quite an achievement for regional galleries to be showing such famous photographers.
"We're really excited to bring this to Rockhampton. It's not often we get photographs of this standard in Australia, let alone Rockhampton," she said.
"Some of the key photographers people can expect to see in the show are Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Peter Lindbergh and many others. There's lots of recognisable images here."
The showcase in Rockhampton also features vintage clothes from the Darnell Collection in Sydney and old cameras that would have been used during the period the images were captured.
The exhibition will move to Mackay in north Queensland later this year and then on to the Gold Coast in south east Queensland.
