Renowned classical pianist Byron Janis has passed away at the age of 95. The American musician, celebrated as one of the greatest pianists of his era, died on March 14. His wife, Maria Cooper Janis, confirmed his death on social media and his website.

Byron Janis, born Byron Yanks in 1928 near Pittsburgh, displayed prodigious talent from a young age. At just 15, he made his orchestral debut with Arturo Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra. By 16, he became the first student of Vladimir Horowitz at the Pittsburgh Symphony. At 18, he secured a record deal with RCA Victor, becoming the youngest artist to do so at the time. By 20, he had made his Carnegie Hall debut.

Throughout his career, Janis released several albums featuring renowned concertos by composers such as Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff. He also composed music, including the score for a Broadway adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Janis gained international acclaim during the Cold War when he performed at the 1960 Cultural Exchange between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, later touring the Soviet Union in 1962. Reflecting on the impact of his music, Janis emphasized how it could change people's feelings and foster understanding.

Despite facing health challenges, including a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis in his hands and wrists in 1973, Janis remained dedicated to his craft. He was appointed as the National Ambassador to the Arts of the Arthritis Foundation by Nancy Reagan after she disclosed his diagnosis following a White House performance in 1985.

Janis received numerous accolades for his contributions to music and diplomacy, including Yale University's Stanford Fellowship, the Commander of the French Legion d'Honneur for Arts and Letters, and the Grand Prix du Disque. He was also recognized in the Congressional Record for his musical achievements.

In an interview, Janis expressed his deep passion for music, describing it as his life's calling. He credited his talent and persistence for overcoming challenges in his musical journey.

Byron Janis is survived by his wife, Maria. He had one child, Stefon, from his first marriage to June Dickson Wright, who passed away in 2017.
