Renovation work starts on Birmingham's Citadel building

Renovation work has started on a historic city centre building in Birmingham.

Office developer Kinrise acquired the Citadel building for £3.89 million last year, with plans to transform it into "the city's most sustainable workplace".

And now the redevelopment of the Corporation Street building is officially under way.

Due to open in the summer, Citadel will offer more than 46,000 sq ft of office, retail and social space as well as state-of-the-art technology. It will be operationally net zero carbon, powered by green electricity and LED lighting.

Kinrise co-founder Sam Lawson Johnston said: "Our ethos at Kinrise has always been to renovate, rather than rebuild and to ensure we are doing our best by the local community. Sustainability is one of the key pillars on which we built Kinrise, and forms a huge part of our work at Citadel, where we are committed to using no fossil fuels in operation.

"We're excited to bring the signature Kinrise solution of contemporary and collaborative office working to Birmingham at Citadel and to play a part in reviving the soul of Corporation Street when we open to new tenants this summer."

London-based design practice Architecture 00 and contractor Overbury are undertaking the sensitive restoration of the building, while local craftsmen are being used throughout the renovation.

The Citadel project is part of the wider regeneration of Corporation Street. Two of Birmingham's most culturally significant buildings - the Grade II* listed Methodist Central Hall and the former Murdoch Chambers and Pitman Building - are also subject to new investment and set for regeneration in the near future.
