Rennes squad left baffled by Raphinha decision following Leeds United transfer

The decision this summer to sell winger Raphinha to Leeds United has baffled the Rennes’ squad, according to reports in the French media.

The Whites secured the services of the 24-year-old on transfer deadline day and the Brazilian winger has been in great form so far this season.

Raphinha played a crucial role in helping Rennes qualify for the UEFA Champions League, scoring seven goals from 30 outings in all competitions.

However, despite only one season at the club, Raphinha explained last week how he felt "devalued" that Rennes were willing to sell him for £15million, dismissing any suggestion he pushed for an exit.

Bielsa talks extensively on Leeds United's set pieces

"I was focused on playing in the Champions League at Rennes. But, knowing that, out of the blue, they accepted an offer from Leeds, for an amount even less than the purchase, that made me feel devalued," he told ESPN Brasil early this month.

“I played on Sunday and, after the match, they put the whole responsibility on me, on leaving.

“Until Saturday, at noon, I was focused on the game. The transfer window was closed, I knew that nothing more would happen.

"I was told that Rennes would only sell me for an offer of 60 million euros, but they sold me for 15 million. I felt devalued.”

L’Equipe report that the Rennes squad remain mystified why the board sanctioned the sale of Raphinha and for such a low price.

The club finished third last season but now sit eighth in Ligue 1, having also been eliminated in Europe.
