Rennes release further statement as they return to France following Tottenham postponement

Rennes have released a further statement following the postponement of their Europa Conference League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs have suffered a Covid outbreak within their camp this week, with their first cases beginning at the weekend with more each day, leading to a passionate press conference from Antonio Conte in which he announced that eight first team players had tested positive and five members of the coaching staff.

Tottenham released a statement on Wednesday night, saying that the game would not take place following discussions with UEFA.

Rennes, who had already flown to the UK, released their own version of events, claiming that the north London club had made the decision themselves.

However, after UEFA confirmed on Thursday morning that the match would not take place and told football.london that they were in talks with both clubs about rescheduling the fixture.

Rennes have now released another statement, confirming their return to France and asking that the rescheduled game does not come at a difficult time for them with their run of fixtures before the winter break begins in Ligue 1 after December 22.

"After being informed of the cancellation of tonight's match by UEFA, Stade Rennais FC decided to return to Brittany. The entire delegation that will board at London City Airport has tested negative," read the French side's statement.

"Stade Rennais FC hope that the interests of the club will be respected given the important sporting deadlines that await the Rouge et Noir this December. The group is now focusing on welcoming Nice on Sunday at Roazhon Park.

"Stade Rennais FC is deeply sorry for the Rennes fans who decided to come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to cheer on the Rouge et Noir."
