Rennes director makes Joe Rodon claim after Tottenham defender seals season-long loan move

Rennes technical director Florian Maurice has claimed there was "no hesitation" from Joe Rodon in securing a season-long loan move to the Ligue 1 club. Always tipped to depart Tottenham this summer with the World Cup on the horizon, the 24-year-old has headed to France for regular first-team football.

The Wales international is no stranger to Roazhon Park, playing there last September for Spurs in the Europa Conference League group stage. The stadium could potentially become his permanent home as Rennes do have the option to purchase him at the end of his loan spell for €20million (£16.7million).

Playing a bit-part role for the Lilywhites ever since his switch from Swansea City in October 2020, Rodon was limited to ten appearances in all competitions last term. Given his need to feature week in, week out ahead of the World Cup after two seasons of limited football, Maurice has confirmed the move went through "very quickly" indeed.

“We needed two centre-backs following Warmed Omari's injury. Joe comes from a top club in England. He will bring us his experience, even if he did not play all the matches last season," the technical director told the French club's official website.

"He played in the European Cup, as we have seen at Roazhon Park in particular. He's a real central defender who likes to defend, he has that aggressive side that we need to allow us to be even more effective defensively.

"He is an international, a starter with Wales and will certainly be called up to play in the World Cup in November. We often talk about complementarity in central defence. They will all have to get to know each other. From Sunday and until November, a first sprint will be announced.

"We are going to need everyone because we are going to be faced with a high density of matches. It's up to us to put them in the right conditions so that they give the best when they are on the pitch.

"It went very quickly, there was no hesitation. He was enthusiastic about the Rennes project. He was there a few months ago to play against us and he was able to discover our team, the football we played and he was interested."

Rodon will be hoping to make his Rennes debut this coming weekend when they host Lorient on the opening weekend of the season. Monaco, Ajaccio, Lens and Brest then follow for Les Rennais later in the month.
