Rennes awarded win for cancelled Europa Conference League tie against Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur were on Monday eliminated from the Europa Conference League after Rennes were awarded a 3-0 victory for their clash on 9 December which was cancelled due to an outbreak of the coronavirus in the Tottenham camp.

The Rennes squad were already in London when Tottenham said eight players and five members of staff had tested positive for Covid-19.

Rennes criticised the decision to call off the tie. They said it was taken unilaterally by Spurs.

Uefa, which organises the competition, had said the game would not be played as it was unable to find a suitable date in the calendar.

Spurs had three games called off in all competitions due to the outbreak and only played their first match since 5 December on Sunday when they drew 2-2 with Liverpool in England’s Premier League.

As a result of the forfeit, Rennes finished top of Group G and advance to the last 16 of the competition.

Runners-up Vitesse Arnhem will play Rapid Vienna - who finished third in their Europa League pool - in a knockout round to reach the last 16 of the Europa Conference League.
