Renfrewshire to be hit with snow as Storm Barra set to batter country

Yellow warnings for snow are forecast around Scotland this week as the temperature drops and Christmas edges closer.

The Met Office have issued weather warnings for snow and wind with the winter’s second storm set to batter the country tomorrow.

Parts of the country face a snow warning between 11am and midnight tomorrow, with heavy wintery showers expected.

Other areas can expect strong gusts as dangerous conditions and disruption to travel is expected to begin from 9am tomorrow - continuing all day - according to the Met Office.

It could see parts of the country cut off amid further power cut concerns after Storm Arwen caused chaos across Scotland last month.

A band of heavy rain is set to turn to snow across Scotland throughout tomorrow with strong south-easterly winds leading to snow drifting in places.

And temperatures are also expected to drop to freezing in central Scotland overnight.

According to the Met Office, “heavy snow is expected across northern England and Scotland bringing likely travel disruption, especially over higher routes.”

The Met Office predicts between 2-5 cm of snow will fall in the period that the yellow warnings are in place.

However this could accumulate in certain areas due to the high winds also forecast.

In a statement, the Met office said: “2-5 cm is expected to accumulate quite widely across the area, but locally this could reach 10 cm, particularly in parts of the Southern Uplands and Highlands.

“Strong south-easterly winds will also lead to snow drifting in places, particularly over the highest routes, adding to poor visibilities.

“Gusts of 45-50 mph are expected widely, with 60-70 mph in exposed coastal locations. Strongest winds will ease across inland areas into the overnight period.”
