Renfrewshire set for snow this week as arctic air blows in

Buddies are in for a cold week – with the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning for snow in the area.

They say that most of Scotland will see at least a dusting of the white stuff come Thursday morning, with potential heavy flurries continuing to fall until Friday afternoon.

Temperatures are set to plummet to -4 tonight, with much of northern and eastern Scotland currently also under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice; and sub-zero temperatures are expected across most of the country nightly until Saturday, with daytime temperatures only creeping a few degrees above freezing.

The Met Office published its warning on its website yesterday and said that “heavy snow has the potential to cause significant disruption on Thursday and Friday”.

They continue that from 3am on Thursday, “there is a small chance that long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel could occur”, as a result of any potential snowfall, adding that “there is a slight chance that roads may become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers”.

Added to that, they say that “there is a small chance that communities could be cut off for several days” and that “long interruptions to power supplies and other services, such as gas, water, telephone and mobile phone coverage, may occur.”

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates said: “The impactful weather will continue through the second half of the week as mild air meets cold air with further snow, ice, wind and then rain likely later in the week and into the weekend.

“From Wednesday, the focus of further snow is across parts of southern England and south Wales, with snow likely to lower levels for a time, and many may wake up to a couple of centimetres of snow on Wednesday morning.

“Through Thursday and Friday the snow risk spreads to central and northern areas of the UK, though it’s not possible to pick out precise locations regarding who will see the heaviest snowfall. With a developing situation, it’s important to stay up to date with the latest forecast and further warnings are very likely.”

The yellow weather warning period ends at 6pm on Friday.

Much of northern England, northern Wales and all of Northern Ireland is also likely to be affected by snowfall.
