Renfrewshire roads bosses hit back at councillor after he claimed "monster" pothole would not be urgently fixed

Roads chiefs have insisted they will be repairing a "monster" pothole in Bridge of Weir this week after a councillor claimed it was not lined up for an urgent fix.

Village councillor James MacLaren slammed the department after he was allegedly told a crater in Lawmarnock Road - close to Barnbrock Farm - had not been deemed a priority repair.

He accused officers of being neglectful and feared there would be a serious incident if it was not fixed urgently.

But roads bosses have hit back at the Conservative elected member insisting he had been told an entire section of the road would be patched up this week, including the pothole.

Councillor MacLaren said: “The pothole near Barnbrock Farm is one I would have thought would have been top of the council’s agenda.

"I was absolutely amazed that an inspector hasn’t classified this as requiring an emergency repair.

“It is a monster of a pothole. Drivers using this route will feel the same and be appalled the council don’t seem to want to act on this pothole.

“Sadly, this is all too typical of Renfrewshire Council’s attitude towards ensuring the region’s roads are in the best condition possible."

The council highlighted £1.1million had been allocated in this year's budget for rural road surface repairs and vowed to prioritise creating a safe network for everyone.

A council spokesman said: "As part of our record £47m, six-year investment in our roads network, £1.1m has been allocated from this year's budget to carry out road surface repairs to rural roads, including Lawmarnock Road in Bridge of Weir.

"We informed the councillor work to repair an entire section of this road, which would include this pothole, is due to take place this week and therefore it would be repaired as part of these works.

"We're committed to providing a safe roads network for all our road users and continue to deliver the largest-ever investment in Renfrewshire's roads and footways."
