Renfrewshire records highest weekly covid death toll since February this year

Eleven people have died of Covid-19 in the past week as Renfrewshire records its highest weekly death toll since February this year.

The fatalities bring the death toll for the local authority area to a tragic 547, with 216 of those occurring in 2021.

Renfrewshire recorded the third highest weekly death toll in Scotland, with Glasgow City recording the highest number of deaths at 23, followed by South Lanarkshire at 14.

The deaths - which took place in the week to Sunday - come as a total of 750 people in the area tested positive for the virus between September 20 and September 26.

A total of 9,480 PCR tests were also carried out in this time.

Currently Renfrewshire is recording a covid infection rate of 418 cases per 100,000 of population, a drop from 496 last week.

On Tuesday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said coronavirus cases remain at a high level but are continually falling.

“It is extremely positive that case numbers have fallen significantly,” she said. “But they remain more than two-and-a-half times higher than early August.

“And so as we move further into autumn and winter - and people meet indoors for longer periods of time - there remains a risk that cases could rise again.”

Vaccinations are also continuing throughout the area, with a total of 125,712 people - 86.4 per cent - now fully vaccinated.

Those aged 18-29 in the area have the lowest uptake of the vaccine, with 63.5 per cent of the age group population having received both doses.

The Express told earlier this week how all 12-15 year olds in Renfrewsire who haven’t yet received their jab will receive a letter this week inviting them to attend a vaccine clinic.

Drop-in clinics have been available to this age group for the last week and now scheduled appointments are being issued to all those eligible.

As of yesterday, 728 youngsters have received their first dose of the vaccine.
