Renfrewshire rail disruption as tree falls on overhead lines with passengers impacted

Train services in Renfrewshire were affected by cancellations again today after a tree fell onto overhead lines.

The tree crashed onto the power cables near Elderslie, with Network Rail engineers attending to remove it.

The incident was reported by ScotRail around 9.30am.

Wind gusts in the area at the time reached around 44mph, according to the Met Office.

Train tickets were being accepted on local buses while the tree was being removed.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We’re dealing with a tree that’s fallen on the overhead lines at Elderslie, near Paisley Gilmour Street.

“We’ve closed the line from Paisley Gilmour Street towards Ayrshire at the moment until we can remove this.”

There was also trouble on the Glasgow to Gourock line with an issue detected at Bishopton.

A safety inspection uncovered a broken railhead, which is part of the track. The problem part of the rail was located in a tunnel.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We’ve inspected the broken rail and we’re not able to make a temporary repair. We need to install a new rail.

“We’re currently working to source a new rail, get it to site and then carry out the repair.”

This issue was resolved by 2pm, although trains were limited to 20mph as they travelled through the troubled section.

Trains were also cancelled over the weekend and on Monday. The RMT union had called off planned strike action, but ScotRail was unable to reinstate timetables.
