Renfrewshire mum has family car stolen from driveway while she slept after thieves 'clone' key

A mum who had her car stolen from her driveway in Newton Mearns fears thieves cloned her car key while she was at her local supermarket.

Suzi Mac had her white Land Rover stolen on January 10 while she was asleep inside her home. The mum-of-four has urged East Renfrewshire Council to install additional CCTV cameras to deter criminals who are operating in the area.

It comes after a total of 17 reports of housebreakings in the Glasgow and Newton Mearns area were reported to police in just two weeks between January 3 and January 17.

Susan told Glasgow Live: "From speaking to folks, some don’t feel safe in their own homes. I have never heard of as many stolen cars or houses being broken into as I have this month in Newton Mearns.

"Loads of folk think the Mearns is full of posh folk with tons of money, in reality, we are all working hard the same as everyone else to make the best for our children.

"Police seem to think the car thief somehow cloned my car key, and recommended keys to be kept in a mental tin from now on. They did a door-to-door to see if any of my neighbours could check their CCTV, I unfortunately, don’t have any CCTV. I think my keys were cloned in the Sainsbury's car park.

"The car wasn't new at all, it's our family car. I have four young children and two dogs - we need our car especially as my eight-year-old has type 1 diabetes and in case of emergencies.

"We're lucky that they didn’t break into the house, and the kids and I are all totally fine. My oldest son was particularly upset about it and it has left him quite emotional and struggling to get to sleep at night in fear that they might come back and break-in. I’m sure this won’t be the case but that’s the impact left.

"I think it’s maybe time for East Renfrewshire Council to put some CCTV in the area as a deterrent to the criminals that see Newton Mearns as an easy target at the moment."

We previously reported how two thieves were caught entering the driveway of a property in Giffnock and stealing undelivered parcels.

The pair, covered by hoods and wearing gloves, were caught on CCTV peering into the property's windows by the shocked homeowner.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed enquiries into the car theft are ongoing and the car is yet to be traced.
