Renfrewshire memorial services remember those who died at work

Gatherings were held in Renfrewshire on Friday to mark International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD).

IWMD is commemorated annually on April 28 to honour those who tragically died due to health and safety failures.

Two events were held in Renfrewshire, firstly at the cairn in Robertson Park, Renfrew, at 11am, and at Renfrewshire House in Paisley at midday.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and health and safety charity Scottish Hazards organised 16 events to take place across the country.

Paisley Trade Union Council secretary Robert Parker said: “On Workers Memorial Day we remember all who went to work, never to return, through no fault of theirs and remember those who still mourn them.

“The latest figures show a doubling of RIDDOR reports in the last year and also vast reductions in mandatory investigations due to staff shortages at the HSE.

“This was predicted to happen after Lord Young’s review of H&S legislation and we dread what the current repeal of safety legislation under the Retained EU Law Revocation Reform Bill will unleash upon safe workplaces.

“A reduction in the regulatory regime doesn’t help businesses or workers and we strongly call on the government to retain and increase health and safety legislation.”
