Renfrewshire events team given help after report uncovers 'excessive' working hours

Renfrewshire Council events staff are to be given more support after it was revealed they were working more than 48 hour weeks ahead of Paisley's Christmas lights switch-on and Halloween Festival.

Safety fears were raised after it was revealed local authority officers were being asked to work “excessive” hours in the lead up to major council events.

Now bosses have said more help will be given to ensure they can still be delivered safely.

An internal audit found that there was a risk that future events could not go ahead if extra staff were not drafted in to help.

The report notes: “Based on the information provided and the analysis of hours worked to ensure that events are delivered safely and successfully, it is clear that employees have been working excessive extra paid and unpaid hours to fulfil the events programme and this requires to be addressed.

“While it is common practice within the events industry to work additional hours to ensure the delivery of successful and safe events, there is a risk that going forward, current resources within the events team may not be sufficient to sustain an events programme similar to prior years.”

A council spokesman said Renfrewshire’s popular Christmas and Halloween events will be delivered safely in future.

He said: “We are very proud of the work done by our events team, who deliver a nationally-significant and award-winning programme which has in previous years brought hundreds of thousands of attendees into Renfrewshire and its town centres, raising our profile across Scotland and beyond.

“The events programme and the timing of our events has been reviewed and we have secured additional resource from across the council and from event partners.
"This will allow us to make sure appropriate staffing resource is in place and prioritise the well-being of the events team – and support them to continue to build on the previous success of the programme as we start to reintroduce major in-person events this winter.”

Renfrewshire Council announced The Spree Festival and Paisley Halloween Festival will return with different formats later this year.
