Renfrewshire cops launch crackdown on speeding motorists as part of national campaign

Renfrewshire cops are to target speeding drivers as part of a nationwide summer campaign to tackle dangerous driving.

Officers will be on the lookout for motorists not sticking to the speed limits in towns and villages across the region.

The National Speeding Campaign, which runs until August 8, will aim to educate drivers on the dangers of going too fast but will also see cops cracking down on people breaking the law.

The effort is supported by Safety Camera Units, which will be out at speeding hotspots.

Police Scotland say speeding is an ever-present contributory factor in fatal and serious road traffic collisions.

With traffic levels being significantly higher than normal, as staycations become the default option for holidays this year, cops and Safety Camera Units will maintain a high profile presence on our roads to influence behaviour through engagement, education, and where necessary enforcement.

In recent weeks there have been calls to bring a dormant speeding camera back in to use on Glenburn Road after a girl was knocked down.

Speed was not a contributing factor in the accident and no charges were brought against the driver but many in the community believe the camera would help prevent further incidents.

Chief Superintendent Louise Blakelock said the campaign is aimed at reducing serious accidents and fatalities on roads across Scotland.

She said “Travelling at inappropriate speeds is proven to be a significant factor in fatal and serious injury collisions. This can be avoided if motorists take road safety seriously by paying attention to speed limits and the prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions”.

“Police Scotland is committed to improving road safety and continues to work with a variety of partners, however we need motorists to recognise the dangers of speeding and the need to obey speed limits at all times”.

She added: “Our officers will interact with drivers throughout the campaign using education where appropriate, but where necessary enforcement action will be taken."
