Renfrew stretch lead at top of table to seven points with crucial Glasgow Perthshire win

Renfrew found their shooting boots in the second half to fire themselves seven points clear at the top of the table.

Title rivals Glasgow Perthshire travelled to New Western Park on Saturday knowing a win would close the gap at the WoSFL Second Division summit to just two points.

But after missing a host of first-half chances, ‘Frew rediscovered their clinical edge after the break with Ciaran Diver netting twice from close-range to put the home side in control.

Diver then turned provider as his cross picked out experienced striker Scott Morton who headed home to wrap up all three points.

The victory sees Renfrew still sitting in pole position as they look to add the Second Division title to their Demolition Cup win earlier this season.

Boss Jimmy Quigley paid tribute to his players for sticking to their task on Saturday and finding form at the right time with the finishing line racing into view.

Quigley told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “We totally dominated the first half but missed a good few chances to take control.

“That’s been the story of our season at times and I feared it could have gone the same way as the Yoker game, when again we didn’t take our chances.

“When you’re on top you need to finish teams off and we haven’t done that enough this season.

“Credit to the boys, in the second half they stuck to it and we were a lot more clinical to get the result.

“Diver was excellent, scoring two and setting up the third. They’re only one of two teams that’s beaten us this season so it was sweet for the boys to get some revenge.

“It was a pressure game but the performances have been excellent recently. We’re dominating the ball and I think we’re hitting our peak at the right time.

“The boys can see the finish line approaching and there’s a real buzz about the club right now.”

This weekend sees Renfrew face a tricky trip to Craigmark Burntonians – one of the few sides that can still deny Renfrew the title.

Quigley is anticipating a tough afternoon but is backing his side, particularly now his strikers are growing in confidence again.

He said: “That was Scotty’s 99th goal for the club against Glasgow Perthshire. He hasn’t had his most consistent season, but when he gets one or two that can set him off on a good scoring run.

“Diver is getting more and more confident too and our front three can cause any team problems.

“We’ve got Craigmark away and then at home the following weekend, so it’ll be two tough, tight games. We’ve not played each other yet so there’s that air of uncertainty about it.

“We’ve got Maybole next month as well, who also have games in hand on us, so it’s a massive few weeks coming up for the club.

“Ultimately, I don’t look at other results and I’ve tried to get the lads to buy into that, too.

“The easiest way to stay at the top is to keep on winning and try to forget what everyone else is doing.”
