Renfrew scout group celebrates turning 100

2nd Renfrew (Trinity) Scout Group started its centenary celebrations in November 2021 and is still marking the special birthday eight months later.

There has been a host of celebrations over the eight months as the scout group from Renfrew marks every occasion in their full centenary year.

The group was founded on November 21 in 1921 and in November last year it marked the start of its 100-year existence.

Last month the Scout group took part in a Group Camp, which included those from the Cubs, Scouts and Explorers where they camped out for the weekend at the Lochgoilhead Scout Centre.

They enjoyed rafting, kayaking and archery and Susan Wilson, who looks after admin and archiving for the scout group, said: “Many of the young people learned new skills, were brave in trying something they thought they could never do, and we were delighted to see that.

"Scouts are, after all, not just about meeting in the halls, they’re about learning, enhancement and character development and we saw all these traits at the camp. Well done everyone, we’re proud of you!

“Testament to the enjoyment were many thank you messages members’ families posted on the group’s Facebook page. Such messages are gratefully received by the leaders as, although we see group members’ enjoyment on a week-by-week basis, it’s good to know that the families see their young people benefiting from what we as a group, and the Scout Association, offer.”

The group is already looking to the future as they prepare to bring the curtains down on their centenary party towards the end of the year.

They look to end the year of celebration with one big event called ‘Final Fling, which will take place on the last day of their centenary celebrations, in November. They also have “have many more events” planned in the coming months that will be announced in due course.

Colin Hogg, group scout leader of 2nd Renfrew, said: "We’re delighted we’re the age we are and, when we look back, all that we have achieved over these years.

"We have a phenomenal heritage, which was brought to life at the memorabilia displays.

“While our history, past members, and memories are extremely important, it’s also important that we use this time to look to the next 100 years. Our current members are the former ones of the future, and I’m very grateful to all of them, their parents and our leaders, for all the support we receive.

“I’m proud to be the group scout leader of such an active and forward-moving group and look forward to it continuing to flourish in the years ahead”.
