Renfrew's push for promotion continues after dishing out 6-2 Port Glasgow drubbing

Renfrew’s promotion hopes are still very much alive after they thrashed Port Glasgow at New Western Park.

‘Frew suffered a slow start, going behind to a penalty before Ciaran Diver’s first of the afternoon drew the hosts level.

Port Glasgow went ahead from an unstoppable free-kick, before in-form Diver again equalised.

Scott Morton grabbed his first with a fine header just before half-time, before the hosts breezed to victory in the second half.

David McKenna netted from a Cameron Kerr free-kick, before Morton made it five with another fine finish.

Diver grabbed his hat-trick late on to secure all three points.

Renfrew boss Jimmy Quigley paid tribute to his “incredible” forward line which he believes can help fire his side into the second tier next season.

Quigley told Express Sport: “It was a brilliant result for us and we were well worthy winners.

“Our front three have been incredible recently and they’re unstoppable at times.

“Scott Morton and Ciaran Diver have nearly 40 goals between them which is an unbelievable return at this stage of the season.

“Going forward we’ve been terrific of late. If we can get our defence working a bit better we’ll be onto a winner.

“We’re just a point behind Ardeer Thistle in fourth spot now with a game in hand, and we know fourth will likely get us into the Championship next season.

“We’ve got ten games left and four games at home before Christmas.

“We need to make the most of them and hopefully we’ll be in a great spot by that point.”

While Renfrew have been scoring heavily in recent games, Quigley believes they simply have to hit the ground running quicker in games if they want to secure promotion from Conference B this season.

He said: “We were a bit slow out of the blocks in the first half and to be honest that’s been our problem in recent matches.

“We need to start games better because against better opposition we could be too far behind if we start slowly to come back and win it.

“There’s plenty of twists and turns left in this division.

"All we can do is make ourselves as solid as we possibly can at the back and hope our forwards keep doing the business up front.

“We’re on a great run. We’ve won five and drawn one of our last six games so we’re definitely on the right track.”
