Renewables giant BayWa r.e. buys 11th Scottish wind farm development

Renewable energy giant BayWa r.e. has bought the Dalquhandy Wind Farm development in South Lanarkshire for an undisclosed sum.

The 45 MW facility on the site of a former mine near Coalburn was sold by Edinburgh-based Brockwell Energy. BayWa r.e. says it generates enough electricity to supply 34,000 households.

It is the 11th wind farm development for BayWa r.e. in Scotland. The international firm's assets include the 151MW North Lowther wind farm which is being built in Dumfries & Galloway. BayWa r.e. UK's operational wind, solar and bio energy assets across the UK and Ireland generate more than 2.1 GW of electricity. The firm has its UK head office in Glasgow.

BayWa r.e. UK managing director Gordon MacDougall said: “We’re delighted to be able to add this new project to our UK portfolio of renewable energy generation sites, and to be a part of bringing new life to a disused colliery.”

Rockwell has wind farms at North Kyle and Lanark and energy-from-waste plants at Grangemouth and Westfield, Fife.

Alex Lambie, CEO of Brockwell Energy Ltd, said: “Brockwell was originally established as a vehicle to use energy project development to revitalise and regenerate former mining sites. The Dalquhandy project is a prime example of this, and we look forward to seeing it continue to play a part in meeting Scotland’s Net Zero ambitions.”

BayWa r.e. UK was advised on the Dalquhandy acquisition by law firm Burges Salmon, which also worked on its long-term corporate Power Purchase Agreement with Tesco plc for a new wind farm near Greenock.

Edinburgh-based corporate finance partner Danny Lee, supported by solicitor Niall Mackle, led the cross-sector team.

Lee said: “It’s a pivotal time for the UK’s renewable energy sector and ambitious companies such as BayWa r.e. UK will be key to achieving carbon emission targets. We are absolutely delighted to have successfully worked with Christine McGregor and her talented team to help deliver the acquisition of Dalquhandy Wind Farm.”
