Bridget Jones fans are sure to be rejoicing after Renée Zellweger said she wants play the the endearing, gaffe-prone character again.

The last outing, 2016's Bridget Jones' Baby, saw the journalist have a baby with her on-and-off again boyfriend, straight-laced barrister Mark Darcy, played by Colin Firth.

When asked about returning once more to play Bridget on The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM, Renée said: "I hope so. I hope so. I mean, it's fun, you know, she's so much fun."

She went on: "I love being in her shoes. I mean, it makes me giggle, you know, every day on set the choices that we get to make about just how awkward we can make her circumstances. It's just so much fun."

Pondering Bridget's enduring popularity, the Oscar winning performer said: "'I find her so endearing … her self-deprecating sort of determination.

"I love her. And I think it's really rare to get to follow a character through different stages in her life.

"And in a way that we find her relatable, because she parallels our own life experiences at that time. I mean, Helen did write another book, so there's that."

The films, also starring Hugh Grant, Sally Phillips and Jim Broadbent, are adapted from author Helen Fielding's comedic novels.

The Texan-born star of Chicago, Cold Mountain and Jerry Maguire, gained two stone to play Bridget, but has previously said she doesn't want to change her shape for a role again.

“My body is whacked,” she admitted, after years of yo-yo dieting, and rapid loss and gain.

She went on: “I had a panic attack with all the specialists talking about how bad this is for you, long term, putting on that much weight in short periods of time and they're all saying, 'You must stop or you’re going to die'."

Since her starring role as Bridget, Renée has moved away from romantic comedies, most recently transforming into serial killer Pam Hupp for a new NBC series.

The true crime drama The Thing About Pam will detail the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria, whose husband Russ was initially wrongly convicted for the killing.

After he was exonerated, Hupp became implicated in the murder and she was charged with first-degree murder in July last year.

Betsy’s husband Russell was originally accused of the murder, but he was released from prison and awarded more than £1 million in compensation. It’s thought that Pam framed him for the crime.

In the new series - which started airing last month- her face was transformed by prosthetics to give her a larger jaw and bigger nose, and her hair was styled into a bright blonde bob.
