Renee Zellweger's overheard people on Tube talking about her looks - and delivered a cutting response

Renee Zellweger has revealed she once overheard passengers on the Tube talking about her “silly” appearance.

The Bridget Jones actress, 50, was the subject of plastic surgery rumours in 2014 when she appeared on the red carpet looking drastically different. Zellweger recalled how she was sitting next to two women and a man on the Tube who were discussing celebrities.

“They were talking about Hollywood and how Hollywood ladies are so silly, especially that Renée Zellweger,” she told Jess Cagle of SiriusXMradio. She heard the passengers say: “How could she do that? Why would she go and have surgery on her face like we wouldn’t know?

“She doesn’t look like herself, and you can’t just do that where you go and don’t look like yourself.”

Zellweger said she stood up to get off and was waiting for the Tube door to open, only to hear the man “still talking about how stupid I am”.

“And he looked up and he said, ‘Oh God, you’re not —you are! Oh my God, but you look just like yourself!’ And I said: ‘Yeah, it’s funny how that works, isn’t it?’”

The actress has previously said she had not altered her face or had surgery, “not that it’s anyone’s business”.

The star took the unusual step of issuing a statement about her changing looks in 2014, saying she was “living a different, happy, more fulfilling life”.

Zellweger said she tried to ignore negative comments. “It’s only momentarily where you go, ‘Jeez, wow, that’s pretty painful.’ But I don’t live in that.”

Her new film, a biopic about singer Judy Garland, is out next month.
