Renée Zellweger harks back to 'painful' experience when she overheard strangers discussing her 'surgery'

Renée Zellweger opened up about her "painful" experience and humiliation after she overheard strangers on a train negatively talking about her appearance.

The star was penalised in 2014 for changing her looks, but she said she was "living a different, happy, more fulfilling life", and in an interview with US radio station SiriusXM's, the 50-year-old Oscar-winner talked about the experience.

She told Jess Cagle about the rumours she endured which suggested that she'd had plastic surgery, and this was following a red carpet appearance five years ago.

She attended the 2010 CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute (

She told Cagle about the man and the two women she was sitting next to on the "subway" who were chatting about celebrities.

She said: "They were talking about Hollywood and how Hollywood ladies are so silly, especially that Renée Zellweger.

"How could she do that? Why would she go and have surgery on her face like we wouldn’t know?"

Zellweger said she thought: "Wow, that’s interesting. Anyway, here’s my stop."

She mentioned that she stood up and was waiting for the door to open so she could go about her day, only to hear the man "still talking about how stupid I am".

Renee continued: "And he looked up and he said, 'Oh God, you’re not — you are! Oh my God, but you look just like yourself!'

"And I said: "Yeah, it’s funny how that works, isn’t it?"

The former Bridget Jones actress tried to limit the negativity that was circling around in her head and said "it's only momentarily where you go", talking about her painful experience.

She has also previously said she had not altered her face or had surgery.

However, she seems to have moved on from the past, as she is now starring in the role of her lifetime in the Judy Garland biopic which will come to theatres on September 27.
