Remote rescues and power cuts as severe weather causes chaos across Stirling

Heavy downpours and thunderstorms this week saw flooding and power cuts while 11 people had to be rescued from a rural beauty spot due to fast-flowing torrents.

Emergency crews raced to the Falls of Falloch, near Crianlarich, on Monday evening following reports that 11 visitors were stranded at the location as a result of quickly rising water levels.

A yellow weather warning was issued by the Met Office across Stirling area on Monday.

Shortly after 5.30pm the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were requested to attend the scene following reports of a number of people in difficulty.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Operations Control mobilised a number of resources to the scene where firefighters assisted 11 people across a gorge to safety.

“There were no injuries reported.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service were also requested to attend. A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 5.42pm on Monday, August 9, to attend an incident at the Falls of Falloch. Five of our special operation response teams and one ambulance was sent to the scene and no patients were transported to hospital.”

It’s understood that groups of visitors attend a location at the beauty spot regularly used as a swimming pool. As torrential rain continued to fall, water levels quickly rose, trapping all 11 people on the rocks on the wrong side of the water.

Volunteers from Killin Mountain Rescue Team were also drafted in to assist firefighters.

Across the area, communities saw localised flooding and in Stirling city centre properties and businesses were left without power.

There was a rescue effort after a motorist was stranded by flooding under the railway bridge at Causewayhead, Stirling.

On Monday afternoon, there was a power cut in the FK8 area of Stirling. Scottish Power Energy Networks said it had no advance warning of the outage and only became aware of it at 3.16pm on Monday.

On their website, they said: ‘Our control centre will attempt to reset the network remotely to restore power in stages, and we will also send our next available engineer to attend site. Our team will work to get your power back on as quickly and as safely as possible by 5.30pm. Once they arrive, or when we receive any update regarding the cause, we will be able to provide you with more information. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.’

Power was restored on Monday evening.

On Sunday, Baker Street and Friars Street saw water flowing down the streets.
