Remote learning plans in place for Falkirk area schools if needed after Christmas

Plans are in place for pupils across Falkirk not to return to school after the Christmas break.

Falkirk Council has drawn up its remote learning schedule incase a of decision to extend the winter holiday, over fears of the new Omicron coronavirus variant.

As it stands though, the local authority says all kids should return to class as normal in January until directed otherwise.

Parents and carers will be alerted the day before if any changes are made during the festive break.

Education chiefs in the district are monitoring the spread of Omicron very closely, with a number of Covid outbreaks in schools over the past week.

A Falkirk Council spokesperson said: "We have ensured that if pupils move to remote learning that the same expectations are in place as was the case during lockdown.

"Pupils will be issued with lateral flow testing kits at the end of term and parents will be asked to test their children before returning to school."

This all comes as a health expert has called for a circuit breaker to be imposed in a bid to halt the rapid spread of the coronavirus Omicron variant in Scotland.

Deepti Gurdasani, an epidemiologist from the Queen Mary University of London, said drastic measures need to be taken by governments over the new strain which was first identified in southern Africa at the end of last month.
