The Cabinet Office has created a card series called Remote Islands Cards to introduce the charms of small inhabited isles along with photos and other information. Sixty-six islands have been selected from across Japan to be featured in the cards, which have been distributed free of charge at tourist information centers and airports on the islands since March 25.
The cards measure 8.8 centimeters by 6.3 centimeters. The front of each card shows a full view of the island and photos of famous places there, while the back contains trivia such as how to get there and specialties of the island. The Cabinet Office prepared 300 to 3,000 cards for each island.
Aogashima island in the Izu Islands chain south of Tokyo is famous for its double caldera, as almost the entire island is the crater of a volcano, and there is a small mountain in the hollow of the crater. The card features an aerial view of the island and an explanation of a specialty shochu Japanese distilled spirit called "aochu."
The card for Oshima island in Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture, which has a population of 41, states, "There are more cats than people."
"For the time being, tourism is in a difficult situation due to the spread of the novel coronavirus, but we hope to make as many fans as possible of the islands, which are full of attractions," said an official in the section for the promotion of ocean policy at the Cabinet Office, which planned the project of creating the cards.
