‘Remigration now’: Kristi Noem pulls the classic Trump minion move. Ignore the tough questions and hope nobody notices

On NBC’s Meet the Press this weekend, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem came with only one goal: Blame Biden for everything. When asked about the controversial “remigration” term used by Trump, she conveniently dodged defining it with an unrelated, robotic speech.

Remigration is a far-right term historically used in Europe by White supremacists to call for the deportation of non-white immigrants. But despite its controversial history, the ethno-nationalist racist term was adopted by the Trump administration in its immigration agenda. The Department of Homeland Security also endorsed efforts to create an “Office of Remigration,” promoting reverse migration. (via The Guardian)

On Nov. 28, Trump announced on his Truth Social that he’s permanently pausing migration from all “third-world countries.” He doubled down, saying, “Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation.” Hours after his post, the DHS also used the term in an official X post, writing:

“The stakes have never been higher, and the goal has never been more clear: Remigration now.”

Noem dodged a question about the definition of remigration

The repeated use of the term, historically associated with far-right racist cries, has put the Trump administration under scrutiny. On NBC’s Meet the Press this weekend, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was asked to clarify these posts. Moderator Kristen Welker asked her a clear question: “How specifically does the Trump administration define remigration?”

Noem’s response? “President Trump has been working towards cleaning up the mess that Joe Biden left us ever since he came into the White House.” A classic “when in doubt, blame Biden” response. Even after Welker pressed her to define the term, Noem continued to dodge it. Instead, she began a long speech about Trump’s deportation efforts:

First of all, we have criminal illegal aliens we’ve been targeting since day one. We have removed millions of people from this country already, just in the few short months that President Trump has been president, by making sure we’re going after criminal illegal aliens that are murderers, rapists, and criminals, and getting them out of our country, bringing them to justice. And then encouraging people to go home.

Her rant continued, but she never reached the definition of “remigration,” as if she hadn’t heard the question at all. But her avoidance of the question was an answer for everyone. The Trump administration knows that it’s a radical term, and yet continues to institutionalize it and promote it as policy.

Trump has been advocating remigration since his presidential campaign last year, and the DHS officially endorsed it in May 2025. Then, in October, the DHS dropped the word in a social media post, followed by a link to self-deportation resources. Since then, it has been used repeatedly, especially after triggering events like the recent DC shooting.
