Remembrance Sunday in Newcastle will be marked by Parade of Sail on Tyne

A flotilla of boats will set sail in a special parade this weekend to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Spectators are set to line the banks of the Tyne to watch the poignant November 14 parade which will include a wreath-laying and two-minute silence at 11am.

This will be the ninth annual tribute organised by the Northumbria Unit of nautical charity Maritime Volunteer Service which will lead the procession of small boats.

Spectators are expected to gather on the Quayside ahead of the parade of around 10 boats which will sail on Remembrance Sunday at 10.35am at the Ouseburn, with MVS vessels Northumberland Freemason, followed by Melita, in the front.

It then will sail up to the Swing Bridge before heading downriver to a point just west of the Millennium Bridge where a wreath will be laid on the water for 11am.

Angela Carrington, head of the MVS unit, said: “Our tribute to the fallen attracts more people each year and we are proud to pay our respects in this unique way.

"The best vantage points will be near and on the Millennium Bridge.”

The MVS, a uniformed, voluntary organisation which works to keep maritime traditions alive, has more than 25 units spread throughout the UK and the Northumbria branch is based at Newcastle's St Peter’s Marina.

New members, aged 18 and over, are always welcome and no experience is necessary as practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communications is available.
