Remembrance Sunday 2020: Thousands mark two-minute silence at home

Thousands of people across Merseyside marked Remembrance Sunday by privately paying their respects at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The usual commemorations at cenotaph monuments and churches across the county had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 restrictions.

But it didn't stop thousands of residents privately marking their own two-minute silence at 11am this morning in memory of those killed during past conflicts.

A small, socially-distanced crowd gathered at the Cenotaph at St George's Hall as a recorded sound of gunfire signalled the start and end of the 120-second silence.

The Liverpool Scottish regiment held their own small outdoor service in nearby St John's Gardens, close to William Brown Street, and afterwards, a lone piper made his way to the cenotaph to play to mark the annual remembrance.

Some veterans did attend wearing uniform to pay their respects in the city centre.

This year, due to the restrictions, an online service was broadcast, pre-recorded in October, with all Covid-19 safe measures in place.

It was officiated by The Rector of Liverpool, The Reverend Canon Dr Crispin Pailing.

In attendance were civic dignitaries including Mayor Joe Anderson, Lord Mayor of Liverpool Councillor Anna Rothery, who were joined by key representatives from the military, ex-service organisations, clergy and faith leaders.

A video showed soldiers based at Liverpool Convention Centre paying their respects as the Last Post was played.

Brigadier Fossey, one of the members of the military currently in the city for the coronavirus mass testing programme, said: "This Remembrance Sunday I feel really proud to be helping the city of Liverpool at this critical time.

"All of us soldiers are here to help our nation in this time of need."

At the city's Bombed Out Church, organisers launched an art installation in the gardens at St Luke’s to mark Remembrance Day.

Schools and members of the public were invited to create poppies from plastic bottles, which will be planted en masse in the memorial garden on Leece Street.

In London, the Queen was joined by family members and the Prime Minister at the scaled-back service at the Cenotaph in London's Whitehall.

Following a two-minute silence, wreaths were laid by Prince Charles, Prince William and Boris Johnson, with less than 30 veterans at Whitehall instead of the usual thousands.

Others who took part in the wreath laying included the Duke of Cambridge, the Princess Royal and Earl of Wessex and opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer.

Also present at the service were former UK prime ministers Theresa May, David Cameron, Tony Blair and Sir John Major.
