Remembering the one-armed League of Ireland legend shot dead on this day 45 years ago

Today marks 45 years since Dundalk and League of Ireland legend Jimmy Hasty was shot dead in Belfast.

The prolific striker was amongst the most feared in the Irish Premier division during the 1960's, racking up a massive tally in his years with both Dundalk and Drogheda.

In just 170 appearances for the Lilywhites, the striker bagged 103 goals in a golden period from the early 1960's all the way towards the 70's.

Hasty even played a part in an Irish side's first ever away win in the European Cup - netting a goal in Dundalk's 2-1 win on the road at FC Zurich back in the 1963/64 season.

Perhaps even more impressive is that Hasty played his entire career with one arm.

The Sailortown native lost his lost his left arm at the age of 14 in a milling machine accident on his first ever day at work - and forged a football career at local clubs Newry Town and Islandmagee before moving to Dundalk.

After retiring from football, he started a family and moved back to Belfast where he worked as a bookmaker.

But on October 11 1974, he was shot dead by a loyalist gunman as he walked down Brougham street.

His murder was claimed by the Ulster Protestant Action Group, a group with links to the UVF.

Hasty is remembered as one of Dundalk's greatest-ever players to this day.
