Remembering how brilliant Leeds United really were at Derby County - player ratings revisited

Leeds United's 4-1 win at Derby County in the second match of the Championship campaign remains one of their best performances of the season.

A Kemar Roofe brace was sandwiched by an early Mateusz Klich opener and late Ezgjan Alioski strike in what was a remarkable day at the office for just about everybody concerned.

As we prepare to return to Pride Park for the first time since then, LeedsLive revisits that day's player ratings.

Leeds United (4-1-4-1)

Bailey Peacock-Farrell - six

The one bum note on an otherwise phenomenal day at the office for the Whites was Tom Lawrence’s first-half equaliser, which feels like an age ago. Yes it was flying and yes it was swerving, but the goalkeeper will have expected better of himself. Thankfully it wasn’t too costly.

Luke Ayling - seven

Tireless, dependable performer at right-back. Had the knowhow and experience to keep Mason Mount and Lawrence in his back pocket when occasion called.

Gaetano Berardi - eight

Prepared to put his body on the line for his team and ever so effective in making those last-ditch challenges and blocks when needed.

Liam Cooper - nine

Not a foot put wrong by this commanding, colossus of a centre-back Marcelo Bielsa has on his hands. Comfortable with short and long-range passing. Likes the messy, physical stuff too, for good measure.

Barry Douglas - seven

Much like Ayling, he did not put a foot wrong, but never featured prominently in the exciting attacks the rest of the team were creating elsewhere on the pitch. Put the shift in he needed to.

Ezgjan Alioski celebrates Leeds United's fourth goal in the 4-1 win over Derby County with Luke Ayling, Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips (Chris Radburn/PA Wire)

Kalvin Phillips - eight

Continues to excel as ball-winner-in-chief in the middle of the park. Provides a vital level of protection for the defence behind him. Proves a valuable ally in attack to, joining in with the passing and movement of those ahead of him.

Pablo Hernandez - eight

Looks like a kid in a sweet shop when those around him are playing as well as they are. Has the basic level of technical ability which makes playing the Bielsa way so natural.

Mateusz Klich - nine

At this rate Adam Forshaw will be hard-pressed to force his way back into the team in place of the Pole. Took his goal beautifully and set the tone for the rest of the match. Seems to have five seconds longer on the ball than most others on the pitch. Oozing with confidence.

Samuel Saiz - nine

Struck fear and terror into the home defence as soon as he picked the ball up in the middle of the park. Joe Ledley failed to bottle him up and so too did Bradley Johnson in the second half. Like so many others who have failed to deal with the Spaniard, they resorted to fouling him. Unplayable at times.

Ezgjan Alioski - eight

Caused moments of frustration for the away support, but always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Showed composure to tuck away his header for United’s fourth.

Kemar Roofe - nine

The goals his performances in the opening two matches have deserved. A wily frontman who knows how to bother the defenders marking him and slip into positions they can’t reach. First goal showed good awareness and jumping ability, but his second was pure class and invention.

Substitutes

Jamal Blackman

Patrick Bamford (on for Roofe 79min) - N/A

Came on to boos from the home support because of his Nottingham Forest roots. Cut a frustrated figure throughout. Picked up a yellow card for a cynical tackle.

Tyler Roberts

Pontus Jansson

Jack Harrison

Lewis Baker (on for Saiz 86min) - N/A

Jamie Shackleton (on for Klich 73min) - seven

At 4-1, with more than 15 minutes still to play, Bielsa saw fit to throw on the teenager for his debut. Quite the vote of confidence. Steady and did not stand out, which is a good sign for a, no doubt, nervous, young man.
