Remembering Ant and Dec's career in music - from Byker Grove to the Royal Albert Hall

Ant and Dec are back on our TV screens with a new series of Saturday Night Takeaway but remember when they lit up the charts as PJ and Duncan?

Yes, after PJ had been blinded in a paint balling accident - "HE CAN'T SEE MAN!" - but long before the lads took the helm of the likes of Pop Idol, Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity, they did rather well as pop stars!

It was a performance as two members of Grove Matrix on Byker Grove that set the wheels in motion on their music career, with the track Tonight I'm Free becoming their first hit, although it did only reach the dizzy heights of 62.

Things went on the up from then though, with follow up Why Me peaking at number 27 before things got even better with the now iconic Let's Get Ready to Rhumble reaching number 9...more on that later!

Their platinum selling debut album Psyche also spawned top 20 hits Eternal Love and If I Give U My Number and saw them nominated for a Brit Award, before second LP Top Katz followed in 1995, with its subsequent tour seeing the Geordie duo headline the Royal Albert Hall and be supported by soon to be worldwide megastars the Backstreet Boys at a Christmas Cracker concert at Newcastle City Hall.

A re-brand to Ant and Dec in the summer of 96 so cardboard cut outs of the lads faces given away in an issue of Smash Hits as they launched comeback single Better Watch Out.

The album that featured on - The Cult of Ant and Dec - was the lads' last in 1997 although they did come out of musical retirement to record We're on the Ball with the England team for the 2002 World Cup.

To celebrate Ant and Dec's music career we've picked out 10 of their songs and put them in a Spotify playlist so you can take a trip down memory lane.

1. Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble

The one that springs to mind immediately. Originally peaking at number 9 in 1994, the track hit the top spot 19 years later after Ant & Dec performed it on Saturday Night Takeaway.

2. Our Radio Rocks

A top 15 hit from 1995 courtesy of a single remix of a popular album track.

3. If I Give You My Number

Another song from PJ & Duncan’s top 5 debut album Psyche, this was a big fan favourite that went down a storm when they took to the stage at the Mizz Roadshow at the City Hall in 1995.

4. Stuck on U

A number 12 smash from the summer of 1995, Ant & Dec travelled to sunnier climes to shoot the video.

5. U Krazy Katz

The second single from the duo’s 1995 album Top Katz, this spawned a music video with some interesting suits and an even more interesting haircut from Ant!

6. Stepping Stone

Their last single release under the name of PJ & Duncan, the Monkees cover narrowly missed the top 10, landing at number 11 in the spring of 1996.

7. Better Watch Out

Re-branded as Ant & Dec, the duo released this in 1996 and with lots of hype- including masks of the pair being given away by Smash Hits magazine, it made the top 10.

8. When I Fall In Love

A bit of a dance anthem for music fans of the Live & Kicking and Top of the Pops era, this song is one of their best sellers, narrowly missing the top 10 at the end of 1996.

9. Shout

About as indie as Ant & Dec got as musicians, the third single from final album The Cult of Ant & Dec divided opinion but made the top 10 nonetheless in early 1997.

10. We’re On The Ball

After a five year hiatus from the charts, the pair scored their then biggest hit to date with the official England anthem for the 2002 World Cup.
