Remember when boxing champ Tyson Fury belted out Walking in Memphis for his Scots fans

As Tyson Fury celebrated his amazing win at the weekend with a sing-song in the ring we remember that time he entertained his Lanarkshire fans with his own rendition of "Walking in Memphis".

The controversial boxer burst into song after a big-hearted punter at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel promised to pledge £2000 to charity if Fury would sing to the sell-out audience at the sportsman’s dinner almost four years ago to this day.

To the delight of fans, the ring king was only too happy to oblige and paraded along the stage singing the Marc Cohn classic Walking in Memphis - but put his own twist on the song by replacing 'Memphis' with 'Glasgow'.

A boxing fan pledged £2000 to the Zak Valie Foundation if Fury would belt out a song.

The 27-year-old fighter was signed up for a sportsman’s dinner by Frank Gilluley, boss of Mossend gym Fighting Scots.

Fury won the WBA, IBF and WBO titles when he defeated Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko last year.

Frank, formerly of Bothwell, said: “During the evening there was a whole host of signed goods and memorabilia being auctioned off for a children’s cancer charity.

“We raised £5000 for the children’s cancer charity and a further £1500 for St Andrew’s Hospice.

“One of the audience members asked Tyson to sing a song and offered to donate £2000 to the charity and he was only too happy to help. It was brilliant stuff.

“The whole evening was a great success. He is a very down to earth man and does a lot of work for charity that not a lot of people know about.

“It took a lot of hard work to bring Tyson to Scotland and he was here for his sporting achievements, not his politics.”

Before his visit to Lanarkshire, Tyson said: “I love Scotland and the Scottish fans, they have a special place with me.

“I personally requested to do an event in Scotland to say a personal thank you for all of their support through my journey to the top. They are a country full of boxing fanatics and there’s nothing better than that.”
