Remedial work on DG1 Leisure Centre in Dumfries get under way

Further remedial works designed to repair the scandal-ridden DG1 leisure facility are under way.

But the repairs come at no cost to the council, say bosses.

Roof works are the latest in a string of structural fixes being carried out at the Hoods Loaning site which famously cost more to repair than it did to build.

The DG1 complex was touted as the jewel in the crown of leisure facilities in Dumfries and Galloway and cost £17 million to build.

But problems emerged soon after it was unveiled to the public in 2008 and it was forced to close for a £20m overhaul in 2014.

The latest repairs come as part of a catalogue of fixes which have angered residents.

They were scheduled to be completed earlier but were shelved due to the coronavirus crisis.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council confirmed the latest project, saying: “Minor remedial works are being carried out by contractor at no cost to council. They were due to be carried out at the year end but were delayed due to Covid-19.”

Experts drafted in to examine the issues surrounding the centre described the catalogue of issues facing the facility as “unique” in both variety and scale.

The failing centre sparked a legal battle between Dumfries and Galloway Council chiefs and construction firm Kier Northern, who presided over the build.

Keir were eventually forced to cough up for a compensation package estimated to sit at around £10m in 2016.

A large-scale probe into the build found that responsibility lay with the contractor for the construction failing to meet appropriate standards but also took aim at council bosses, calling on public bodies to ensure they had resources in place to check that construction projects are built to standard and regulation-compliant.

Councillor Graham Bell, who represents North West Dumfries, said: “I know there were some defects there which need to be sorted out.

“It’s good news that it is going to be carried out at no cost to the council because it is a white elephant.”
