Remarkable reunion sees Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa presented with St Joseph's Boys jersey

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa was presented with a St Joseph's Boys jersey on Saturday after a reunion, over 30 years in the making, with a former player.

In the 1980s Fabian Costello was playing for a Newell's Old Boys underage side under an ambitious young coach called Bielsa.

By 1990 the same Bielsa was promoted to coach the side's senior team and would become a club legend to the extent that the stadium now bears his name.

Costello, who was born in Rosario (the birthplace of Lionel Messi, a one-time Newell youth player), would enjoy a playing career highlighted by a Copa Libertadores victory with Penarol of Montevideo in 1987.

Fast forward to 2021 and Bielsa, 66, is now the manager of Leeds United after leading them to a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

In contrast Costello enjoys a quieter life. After living in Cork for many years he is now a coach at St Joseph's Boys in Dublin, a club famed for producing many of Ireland's best talents.

This weekend he was in Leeds where Bielsa's side were playing Wolves at Elland Road and an amazing reunion took place, with Costello presenting his old boss with a St Joseph's jersey signed by their under 11s team.

The pair's former club Newell’s Old Boys tweeted the pictures, along with St Joseph's who were also delighted to be part of a reunion a long time in the making.
