Remarkable portraits show what Leeds city centre looked like almost 200 years ago

Stunning hand-drawn pictures of what Leeds looked like in the 19th Century reveal just how much the city centre has changed.

The delicately curated portraits reveal how things were a time long before cars and tarmacked roads, with horse-drawn carriages dominating the streets instead.

Leeds Corn Exchange is shown in the amazing image from 1829 at the top of this story, with men in bowler hats and women sporting bonnets.

The picture below shows Park Row in 1868, with the picture looking in a northern direction up from where Leeds train station now stands. On the right-hand side is Mill Hill Chapel.

The images have been released by Thoresby Society and are just a small example of what to expect at their forthcoming lunchtime lectures.

Four fascinating events will take place throughout November, with each shining a spotlight on the city's rich and illustrious history.

Eveleigh Bradford, Thoresby Society president, said: "This is a wonderful programme of free lunchtime public lectures about Leeds with absolutely first-rate speakers and fascinating topics.

"The lectures are at lunchtime to make them convenient for both members and members of the public to attend."

The lunchtime lectures are completely free of charge, but you'll need to book your place as there are only a limited number of spaces available.

For more information, visit the Thoresby Society website.
