A “remarkable and independent lady” has celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by her loved ones.
Nancy Mickel enjoyed the milestone with her family, a glass of champagne and an Oliphant pie – one of her favourite treats!
And her final surprise from her family on the joyful day
of celebration was the arrival of Linlithgow Provost Liz Park.
Though a Bathgate Bairn, all of Nancy’s ancestors were born and lived their lives as part of the Linlithgow community – and that is where many of her memories lie.
Nancy’s long life has been one filled with many challenges, from her work in the Wrens during WW2 to spending many years in hospital when she was struck with TB at a time when there was no cure except bed rest and fresh air.
Her commercial skills were superb and varied, working for the council in the housing department both in Whitburn, Bathgate and Linlithgow.
She has travelled the world with her friend Kay and family members to visit relatives as far apart
as Australia and Canada where her twin brother Jim lived.
It was these far-flung nephews and nieces and their offspring who joined her celebration party via Zoom on her party day, with other family members arriving in person from different parts of the UK and two from Canada.
The party began with her being greeted by a rendition of Happy Birthday played by one of her many great nephews and one of many great nieces before she settled into her chair and the party began.
Nancy’s request for her Birthday Tea was Oliphant’s pies and champagne – she’s a woman of particular tastes – which everyone was happy to provide for a remarkable and independent lady who has reached such a wonderful milestone in her life.
