Remaking Dad's Army is 'dangerous' fears Sergeant Wilson actor Robert Bathurst

Robert Bathurst reckons remaking three lost Dad’s Army episodes is “fraught with danger” and says he thought twice about taking part.

The Cold Feet actor, 62, said there was bound to be scepticism about the new cast but thinks real fans of the classic show will be happy.

TV channel Gold used the original scripts to remake the episodes, which were wiped by the BBC after being broadcast 50 years ago.

Robert, who plays Sergeant Wilson, told the Series Linked podcast: “It’s fraught with potential dangers because, I mean, who wants to see other people do Dad’s Army, apart from Arnold Ridley, and Arthur Lowe, and John Le Mesurier, and everybody like that?

“I wrestled with it, until I realised that it was all about the lost episodes.

“Those three have never been discovered, and here we are now having remade those and so Dad’s Army fans can see all 80 shows, all 80 scripts, but not all with the same people, sadly.”

Asked why people should watch the shows, he said: “There’s bound to be scepticism.

"I think you have to surrender to anything you watch.

“You have to be prepared to give it time, and I think it’s of curiosity value.

"Whether it makes them laugh or not is up to them, but it’s of curiosity value to see other people hacking around and trying to do it.

"This sitcom may not be your thing, but in terms of how things are constructed, you have to just relax and enjoy.”
