Remains of two Scots sealed inside tragic New Zealand coal mine after it's closed permanently

A New Zealand coal mine where 29 workers, including two Scots, died in a disaster will be sealed off forever, leaving the victims’ remains trapped inside.

The move comes after families of those killed ended a legal action to fight the New Zealand Government’s decision to permanently close the Pike River mine.

Pete Rodger, 40, from Perthshire, and Malcolm Campbell, 25, from St Andrews, both perished in a series of blasts at the mine in November 2010.

The families’ legal case was settled ahead of a court hearing due to take place today.

The Pike River Recovery Agency plans to hand the South Island mine over as part of the Paparoa National Park.
