Remains of NSW woman found in forest

The man convicted of killing a Wagga Wagga woman three years ago has led police to the site of what's believed to be her shallow grave in a NSW forest.

Allecha Boyd, 27, was last seen in the township of Coolamon in the NSW Riverina on August 10, 2017.

In February, Samuel John Shephard, 39, pleaded guilty to her shooting murder and was sentenced to 27 years and seven months in prison, while another man and a woman were sentenced for being accessories after the fact.

Riverina Police District Commander Superintendent Bob Noble said Shephard was escorted by police and Corrective Service officers to the Lester State Forest, about 20km southwest of Coolamon on Tuesday, where they discovered skeletal remains.

"Ultimately, yes, he did take us to the place yesterday where the remains were exhumed," he told reporters.

"Obviously those remains have yet to be formally identified however given the circumstances ... we do believe ...the remains are Allecha Boyd," he said.

The family had been contacted and were relieved, he said.

"It's a source of relief for police, not so much satisfaction, certainly no joy," he said.

Supt Noble said Shephard's motive for the crime and why he agreed to help police to find the remains were still unclear.

The remains will undergo a forensic examination and DNA testing as part of the formal identification process.
