Remains of large creature wash up on Porthcawl seafront

The decomposing body of a large sea creature has been discovered on a beach in Porthcawl by a woman walking her dogs.

Lisa Richard from Swansea stumbled across the the strange find near Rest Bay last week on Thursday, April 8 and couldn't work out what it was.

The 33-year-old cleaner said the remains, which appeared to have four flipper-like feet and was bigger in size than one of her pet Collies, ended up drawing quite a crowd - all of whom were vying to get a closer look.

"It was about four and a half foot long and my first thought was, "I hope it's not what's left of that walrus that had gone missing from Tenby'," she said, referring to Wally, the tusked Arctic mammal who'd recently turned up on the coast of southwest Wales.

After basking in both the spring sunshine and the media spotlight - he'd become quite a celebrity during his short stay - Wally suddenly disappeared after being disturbed by too many curious onlookers, prompting Lisa to fear the worst.

However, since then Wally has made a reappearance, ruling out the possibility it might be him - while the condition of the discovery also suggests the creature had been dead for a much longer period of time.

One wildlife expert WalesOnline spoke to explained that its advanced state of decomposition makes identification difficult, although she admitted that it could be the carcass of a seal.

Indeed, it's not uncommon to see seals in this part of the world, although they normally appear further west and later in the year.

Indeed, hundreds live on the Pembrokeshire coast and between August and December, during which period they settle onto a few select beaches to have their babies.

The best places to see them are the Marloes Peninsula and Skomer Island and Ramsey.
